When they woke up to rain and a flash flood watch, they decided to move all games on the final day of the 50-team, four-day boys basketball tournament to the Whitehall-Coplay School District complex with Dick Tracy Court in Whitehall High’s main gym serving as the centerpiece.

“It was a no-brainer to go inside,” Klein said. “It was raining and we weren’t going to be ready in time. We didn’t have to get out the blow dryers, the squeegees and do all kind of stuff to dry off the courts. We would have been four hours behind. And we have a great partner at Whitehall and they accommodated us on short notice. They have simplified things by having four courts on one campus and we could bring the games over here without missing a beat. We could accommodate the fans and everybody.”

The move inside seemed to take Mother Nature’s elements out of the mix and enhance the performances of some of the area’s most special players.

Defending tournament champ Allentown Central Catholic will be in that final game after beating Reading and Parkland in the big school winners bracket semifinals and final. In the 48-45 win over Parkland, rising junior Jahrel Vigo scored 30 points and had 24 of his team’s first 32 points.

The two were set to meet again in the finals after Parkland beat Emmaus 62-54 in a final three game.

“I thought we needed that kind of performance, from me,” Vigo said. “Parkland has [Nick] Coval and a lot of good shooters. We had to get out on their shooters and our defense was key. Coval can get into the lane and create shots, but our offense and defense was good.”

Coval had 19 and Robbie Ruisch added 16 for the Trojans.

Vigo said it’s hard to score 30 in a game when opponents “strategize against you” and whether it’s July or January, the rivalry between the Vikings and Trojans is a natural. He was happy to get out of the heat and rain and go inside for this one.

“I like playing outdoors, too, but with the heat and rain, I was glad we came inside and we didn’t have to worry about anything,” Vigo said.

Barber scores 31

Will Barber is one of the area’s best lacrosse players and has already committed to Saint Joseph’s to play Division I lacrosse.

But Barber is also one of the area’s top boys basketball players. He was a first-team all-Eastern Pennsylvania Conference selection and will be one of the best players in the league again next winter as a senior.

One game after Vigo’s spectactular 30-point effort Barber showed off his skills with a 31-point performance in a 60-58 come-from-behind win over Phillipsburg to put the Green Hornets into the final three of the big school tournament.

Emmaus, which rallied from a 23-8 deficit, won six games in a row after losing to Liberty Friday night. The Green Hornets eventually had their run end with a 62-54 loss to Parkland.

“To lose our first game on Friday night and come back to be in the final three is what has me so proud of our guys,” Green Hornets coach Steve Yoder said. “Our two senior leaders, Will and Jametric Harris, have really stepped up. The kids kept showing up and we were 15 deep and we’ve played 15 guys in every game except this last one. I think has paid off because we’re a little more fresh than maybe some of the other teams. We’ve had a great weekend.”

Barber averaged a team-high 17.3 points per game last season and Yoder said he has to tell him to be a little more selfish at times.

“Some of the guys he leaned on last year like Dylan Darville and Jake Fotta are now gone and these younger kids are doing an incredible job, but I told him that the younger kids need to feel your presence,” Yoder said. “He has been doing that.”

While Barber had 15 points in the first half and 16 in the second, Harris, was also consistent with seven in each half.

“Jametric has been unstoppable at times,” Yoder said. “We’re excited.”

Big School bracket

Whitehall posted one of the most exciting wins of the tournament on Saturday night in one of the last games played at Cedar Beach before the rain came.

The Zephyrs rallied from a sizable deficit to go overtime to beat last year’s District 11 6A finalist Liberty, 54-53.

Luke Keppel hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to tie it and then delivered what proved to be the game-winning points on an old-fashioned three-point play with nine seconds left in OT and the Zephyrs won.

Keppel was one of several Whitehall players who came back from an AAU tournament in Myrtle Beach, arriving home at 3 a.m. Saturday because they wanted to play for their high school team in the Showcase. Keppel finished with 16 points against Liberty, but injured his ankle early in what proved to be a tournament-ending loss to Phillipsburg Sunday morning.

Phillipsburg then stayed alive in the tournament by beating Reading on a buzzer-beater before eventually losing a thriller to Emmaus.

Palmerton wins small school title

Ken Termini has made a lot of progress with the Palmerton program in his time as head coach.

And, the Blue Bombers won a district title a few years ago.

But perhaps Termini was never prouder of his program than on Sunday when the Blue Bombers fought back from a 15-point deficit to beat defending tournament champ Holy Cross 62-60 in the small-school title game at Whitehall.

Matt Machalik was named MVP after he scored 28 points, including 19 in the second half in leading Palmerton.

“We’ve done a lot of knocking on the door of championships, but this time we were able to walk through it,” Termini said after his team went 5-1 over four days. “Our kids showed a lot of heart, down 15 and playing their third game of the day and playing against a great Holy Cross team that is so well-coached and so disciplined. But we talk about playing for Palmerton and playing with heart, guts and pride and I think the boys did that today.”

Trace Stahler came up with a late steal that clinched the win for Palmerton, which avenged an earlier 49-47 loss to the District 2 power in the winners bracket final.

“Trace has worked so hard the last few years and things sometimes didn’t click as fast as he would have liked it, too,” Termini said. “I said Trace ‘all that hard work you’ve put in is paying off today; today is pay day for you!’ He showed it out here today and I think he’s going to have a great senior year with all of the boys.”

Machalik, who recently committed to play football at Lehigh, said it was a big moment for the program.

“We stress getting to Sunday and we had to win against tough teams like Oley Valley and Northwestern Lehigh and we had a great team like Holy Cross to play in the final,” Machalik said. “We lost to them early, but fought our way back through the losers bracket. It’s great to win this championship. We wanted it so bad. We needed to do the little things to get this done.”

As for Lehigh, Machalik said it’s a great fit for him.

“I formed a really great relationship with the coaches and I’m just happy to be going there,” he said. “Local support is going to be very big. I just want to represent the Lehigh Valley. But I’m really pumped up for my last seasons at Palmerton. I am trying to leave my legacy behind and go win some championships.

Blue Eagles soar to JV crown

Nazareth’s varsity boys basketball team is coming off a 10-12 season that included a 7-9 EPC mark.

The Blue Eagles may have a brighter future as evidenced by them winning the JV championship with a 47-40 overtime win over Liberty.

“These guys fought to the end,” said Nazareth coach Ed Reed. “It’s a very hard-working team and it’s one of those teams you could go to battle with any day.”

Nazareth went 5-0 and beat Southern Lehigh, Emmaus, Easton and Muhlenberg Township en route to the finals.

“These are all sophomores and we didn’t know what to expect going into this tournament,” Reed said. “These guys put a lot into this tournament and we have a great future. They earned everything they got.”

Reed emphasized it was a team effort, but among the guys who had big performances were Gavin Kershner, Jayden Wolf and Logan Hahn.

“Honestly, I could name every single guy on this team,” Reed said.

Nazareth was boosted by having NFL star receiver Jahan Dotson around offering encouragement for the second straight day.

“Jahan is just a great guy,” Nazareth varsity coach Joe Arndt said. “He loves coming back here. Our kids see him so much that to them, it’s not that big of a deal to see him. But Jahan is a special guy and will always be part of our program.”

But there were also down-to-the-wire thrillers as Bethlehem Catholic edged Liberty and East Stroudsburg South outlasted Pocono Mountain West.

Perhaps the night’s biggest surprise came from Dieruff as the Huskies, who have lost numerous close games all season, defeated Nazareth.

Allen, Nazareth, and Northampton all entered the night with 9-10 overall records and in a virtual tie for the final two spots available in the District 11 6A tournament.

But all three lost on the final night of January and the quest for those last two berths will continue Friday when Allen travels to Central Catholic, Nazareth hosts Easton and Northampton entertains Whitehall.

Thursday’s Emmaus-Parkland game has been moved back from a 7 p.m. start to 8 so that the gym can be cleared after the freshman and junior varsity games which are free to those wanting to attend. Tickets for the varsity game will cost adults $5 and students $3 with school ID. Senior citizens 62 and older and military veterans are free.

Here’s a look at each EPC game from Tuesday’s schedule:

Beasts of the East boys basketball rankings: Allentown Central Catholic, Executive Education among those on the rise https://www.mcall.com/2023/01/31/beasts-of-the-east-boys-basketball-rankings-allentown-central-catholic-executive-education-among-those-on-the-rise/ https://www.mcall.com/2023/01/31/beasts-of-the-east-boys-basketball-rankings-allentown-central-catholic-executive-education-among-those-on-the-rise/#respond Tue, 31 Jan 2023 16:00:41 +0000 https://www.mcall.com/2023/01/31/beasts-of-the-east-boys-basketball-rankings-allentown-central-catholic-executive-education-among-those-on-the-rise/ Philadelphia has become the city of champions thanks to the Phillies making the World Series and the Eagles reaching the Super Bowl.

Those two teams getting to the biggest stage of their sport doesn’t happen every year.

However, the city’s scholastic boys basketball teams from the Public League and Catholic League have been dominant almost from the time they joined the PIAA back in the 2000s.

The latest “Beasts of the East” rankings, which gauge the strength of programs in Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, and 12, reflect the power of Philly hoops as all six classes feature No. 1 teams from District 12.

Imhotep retains the top spot in Class 5A even after it fell to Camden 60-57 Saturday before a sold-out crowd of 4,200 at Saint Joseph’s Hagan Arena. The game, considered to be the most-anticipated in Philly high school hoops in more than 20 years, featured three five-star Kentucky recruits. One of them was Camden’s D.J. Wagner, who led Camden with 22 points.

Wagner and Camden packed Allentown’s PPL Center in a one-night showcase last winter.

Of local interest, Archbishop Wood, which is ranked third in Class 6A, will be at Parkland on Sunday to take on the Trojans at about 1:40 p.m. in the middle contest of the three games in the Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase.

Executive Education, which will play The Patrick School in the Hoop Group event at noon, remains 6th in Class 3A, and Allentown Central Catholic has moved up to sixth in Class 4A.

Here are the latest “Beasts of the East” rankings provided by scholastic basketball gurus Jason Hackman and Toomey Anderson.

Lehigh Valley wrestling rankings: Wilson’s DiBiagio, Salisbury’s Miller dealing with weighty issues https://www.mcall.com/2023/01/30/lehigh-valley-wrestling-rankings-wilsons-dibiagio-salisburys-miller-dealing-with-weighty-issues/ https://www.mcall.com/2023/01/30/lehigh-valley-wrestling-rankings-wilsons-dibiagio-salisburys-miller-dealing-with-weighty-issues/#respond Tue, 31 Jan 2023 01:15:55 +0000 https://www.mcall.com/2023/01/30/lehigh-valley-wrestling-rankings-wilsons-dibiagio-salisburys-miller-dealing-with-weighty-issues/ Giovanni DiBiagio struggled mightily last season with his weight. Sweets were the main culprit.

The Wilson junior has a better grip this year on his diet, which is why the weight cut after Christmas went smoothly.

“Eating is the main thing, what I put into my body,” DiBiagio said. “I know what I’m doing now. I was a big sweet tooth, but ever since last year when I was cutting a lot of weight I basically gave [sweets] up.

“I eat fish, any seafood, fruit before my matches. That gets me through it.”

DiBiagio bounced back after a disappointing blood-round loss at Saturday’s Ultimate Duals to win Sunday’s Colonial League championship at 114 pounds.

Mitch Miller has the opposite issue. He could eat whatever he wanted for days and still be outweighed by 20, 30, 40 pounds or more every match in the 285-pound class.

The Salisbury senior maintains a healthy diet and sits around 228 pounds, so his adjustments come on the mat.

“I’ve got to prepare to wrestle bigger boys,” Miller said Sunday after winning the Colonial League title. “These guys are big, but there’s always someone bigger. It doesn’t end here.

“You have to have a lot more patience because there are smaller windows when you’re wrestling big guys. You have to watch to not get thrown, especially at my weight. It grounds you a lot better.”

Miller is 22-4 this season. Those four setbacks came against opponents who were much closer to 285 pounds than 228. He is hoping to reach the state tournament this season after finishing one win shy last year while part of Central Catholic’s team. Salisbury and Central Catholic now have a cooperative agreement.

Miller’s 7-2 decision in the Colonial League final was his first win this season by decision. He has 18 pins and three forfeits.

DiBiagio (19-8) has a similar goal. He didn’t place at last year’s Class 2A Southeast Regional at 107 pounds. He believes experience, an improved diet and offseason training give him a better chance.

“For most lighter weights,” he said, “they are doing the same thing. It’s not just me [cutting weight]. I love cross country and that really helps me with my training. And I’m eating right.”

Salisbury's Mitch Miller, front, continues to adjust to giving up 30 pounds or more every time he competes in the 285-pound weight class. He won the Colonial League title Sunday.

Those two and their teammates found solace the next day in Red Rovers coach Jody Karam’s basement. They worked out their frustrations by weight lifting and talking through the rest.

That formula has worked well this season for Krazer and Geiger.

Krazer added more than 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason to make the jump from 138 to 160 pounds. Geiger continues to use his strength as a factor in matches. Both also competed a ton in the offseason and worked on their technical flaws.

The two benefited most, however, from talking to a sports psychologist about performance anxiety.

“It was about fixing my mindset,” Krazer said. “A lot of times last year, I was too nervous during matches. This year, I’ve just focused on having fun. Taking deep breathes, calming myself down and staying focused on fixing technique with extra private sessions and talking to my coaches about that stuff.

“Ever since I’ve talked about it, I’ve been doing better.”

Krazer and Geiger came through with victories Thursday in an EPC showdown against banged-up Parkland. Krazer pinned Victor Carrasquilla moments after Geiger finished off another narrow win over Juan Moya.

Their victories came in the midst of five in a row by the Red Rovers to take control and win 44-20.

“I’ve had some difficulties in a lot of these dual meets,” Geiger admitted. “In tournaments, I’m good. But these dual meets I hadn’t built up the confidence. I’m starting to get it back every match and I’m feeling better out there.

“[The sports psychologist] really helped me put it in perspective, what I need to do when I get out there. I just need to have fun out there.”

The fun has led to winning.

Krazer is 18-7 this season, but his biggest confidence booster came last Thursday when he pushed state title contender Bekhruz Sadriddinov of Council Rock South to the limit before losing 7-6.

The Red Rovers senior, 12-10 a year ago, felt like his mentality and technical skills came together in that match.

“He was probably supposed to beat up on me,” Krazer said. “But I felt calm before that match, felt like all my technique was working. I felt like I could have won that match. I felt like that was my best match in a long time.

“I feel like I can hang with any of the top guys. Knowing my offense works and having confidence 100% helps. It’s helped me since the beginning of this season.”

Geiger also is 18-7 and is coming out on the other side after a tough stretch that started earlier this month at Virginia Duals. He was 19-16 a season ago.

Parkland, meanwhile, is trying to find its stride in a season that has been bumpy from the start when it had a three-week shutdown because of a skin issue.

Several members have been sick and one dealt with skin and health issues the last two weeks.

“I was worried [the score] would be worse,” Trojans coach Jon Trenge said. [Aaron] Ciampittiello hadn’t wrestled in 10 days. A bunch of our guys have been sick.

“But that being said, Easton is wrestling really well. I kind of like how stingy they are. They are controlling hands really well. They are well coached. They are listening to their coaches, and I was a little frustrated with some of our guys today with some things.

“You have ups and downs throughout the season. This is a good time to have a down, so we can bounce back and learn from it.”

Ben Fanelli, who dealt with confidence issues during tough losses in his first two seasons, got Easton off to a strong start Thursday by picking up a 9-1 major decision over Parkland’s Phoenix DelVecchio.

Fanelli’s positioning and counter attacks were solid. He scored in the final seconds of the first and second periods, then got two more takedowns in the third to get the team bonus point.

“Ben is rock solid,” Karam said. “He’s ducked nobody. He seeks the best competition. We promote that in our program. That kid right there goes after everybody.”

Trenge sees the affects of the late Greg Strobel in how Fanelli approaches a match.

“Fanelli is really good at stalling and not doing anything wrong,” Trenge said, “and the minute you extend yourself, whoop, he’s around the corner and behind you.

“They’ll wrestle almost nothing but counters until the last 15 seconds of a period, and then they’ll try to score on you. [Fanelli] is very sneaky. He’s very good at that stuff. I think it’s coaching because I know Strobel used to help out Karam at Liberty. Strobel used to train us [at Lehigh] to score in the last 15 seconds.

“And Strobel used to say that the guy who wins is the one who makes the least mistakes. Our guys sometimes, like [Juan] Moya, puts himself out there way too much. And a guy who doesn’t come out of his box and stays in position can take advantage of him.”

Oliver Fairchild and Krazer got pins and Jayden Hazzard finished off the five-bout flurry by holding off Parkland’s Emanuel Montalvo for a 28-3 Easton lead.

After Parkland standout Adrian Gacek pinned Aidan Hutchison at 189, Tyler Cocciolillo got it back with a fall at 215 for Easton.

Michael Gavrilesku got a pin at 285 and Blake Dergham a technical fall at 114 for the Trojans, but that was it after Leo Kern won the second bout of the night at 133.

Nick Salamone was strong in a 12-1 major at 107 and Chris Kelly got a pin in 5:40 to finish things off for the Red Rovers.

“Saturday set us back a little bit,” Krazer said. “I won, but the team didn’t. That sucked and was shocking for us. We had to get that out of our heads.

“We moved past it. We couldn’t let the distractions get to us. Lifting the next day at our coach’s house, we had some fun.”

That carried over to Thursday.
