No one performed better in Patriot League football this fall than Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks went 12-0, earned a No. 4 national ranking, and a second straight league championship, not to mention a No. 5 seed and a first-round bye in the FCS playoffs.
While Lehigh waits to see who wins Saturday’s Harvard-Villanova game to find out who’s coming to Goodman Stadium at noon on Dec. 6, the team picked up a boatload of seasonal awards from the Patriot League earlier this week.
Junior running back Luke Yoder and senior linebacker Tyler Ochojski captured the league’s offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively, and third-year head coach Kevin Cahill and his assistants were saluted as the coaching staff of the year.
Yoder finished among the league and FCS leaders in rushing yards (1,329), rushing touchdowns (15), and yards per carry (7.11), while posting career-highs of 234 yards and four touchdowns in the Mountain Hawks’ 42-32 win over Lafayette. Ochojski led the league in sacks (10), while finishing fourth in TFLs (12.0) for a league-high loss of 90 yards to help Lehigh’s defense rank among the nation’s elite.
Lehigh’s coaching staff earned the Patriot League Dick Biddle Coaching Staff of the Year award after guiding the Mountain Hawks to one of three undefeated teams in the FCS.
In addition to the Patriot League honors, Yoder, Ochojski and Cahill are finalists for national FCS awards. Yoder is the program’s first Walter Payton Award finalist since Dom Bragalone in 2017. Ochojski is a finalist for the Buck Buhanan Award, following Mike DeNucci’s nomination last year. Cahill is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award for the top coach in FCS football.
All of those awards will be presented on Jan. 3.
Overall, 63 players were selected to the all-Patriot League first and second teams. The Mountain Hawks led the way with 14 selections, including 12 members of the first team. Lafayette and Richmond each had 11 representatives, with the Leopards placing five on the first team and the Spiders having four first-teamers.
On the second-team offense were three Lafayette players from Lehigh Valley high schools – tight end Ethan Hosak from Allentown Central Catholic and linemen Sean Wilson (Easton) and Sean Kinney.
The eight Patriot League football head coaches voted on the major awards and all-league teams. They were not allowed to vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
