A fire that broke out Friday afternoon at a homeless encampment in Allentown was put out within two hours, a fire official said.
Deputy Allentown Fire Chief Matt Eharth said there were no injuries in the fire, which started around 1:30 p.m. on Kline Island near the Lehigh County Authority Wastewater Treatment Plant.
There was no damage, except for some of the wooded area, Eharth said. Photos taken by a freelance photographer showed flames and smoke rising in the woods.
Eharth said about 15 firefighters and four pieces of equipment responded. Crews entered the island on the Union Street side near the treatment plant. The island is between Basin Street and the Lehigh River, near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
The deputy chief said officials do not know how or where the fire started. He said the area is known for being the site of a homeless encampment.
As Lehigh Valley cities clear encampments, smaller communities look at ways to stop them
