More than a thousand Lehigh Valley residents remained without power Thursday evening, after a cold front brought strong winds to the area the night before.

As of 6:30 p.m., PPL reported 679 outages in Lehigh County and 373 in Northampton County. Areas still experiencing a high number of outages included Lower Macungie Township with more than 500 and Hanover Township, Northampton County, with nearly 200.

Met-Ed was still reporting 650 outages in Northampton County, with most of those in Lower and Upper Mount Bethel townships.

At one point Wednesday night, nearly 10,000 Lehigh Valley residents were without power. That dropped to about 6,000 by midnight.

Numerous downed trees and wires were reported across the Lehigh Valley, leading to road closures.

In addition to producing high winds, the cold front brought some severe thunderstorms to the region. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southern Lehigh and Northampton counties around 10 p.m. Those storms were capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts, with damage to roofs, siding, trees and power lines possible, the weather service warned.

The entire region was under a wind advisory until 7 a.m. Thursday. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph were expected, with gusts up to 50 mph, according to the weather service.

Just before 2 a.m. Thursday, a 45 mph wind gust was reported at Lehigh Valley International Airport.
