Lehigh Valley residents woke up Sunday morning to the biggest snowfall of the season.
The latest winter storm to affect the region delivered more snow than the 2-4 inches that was expected. Snowfall amounts across the Valley ranged from 5-7 inches, with some areas, such as Coopersburg, seeing 8 inches of snow.
Mike Lee, a meteorologist with the weather service’s forecast office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said the higher-than-expected snowfall was due to the snow band developing across a wider area than initially forecast.
It was the most snowfall in the region since Jan. 19, when 5.7 inches were measured at Lehigh Valley International Airport. Before that, the biggest snowfall was just over 9 inches Feb. 13, 2024.
By 8:30 a.m., snow largely moved out of the area, but lingering snow showers are possible through noon. The region was under a winter weather advisory until 10 a.m.
However, increasing winds could lead to blowing snow that could reduce visibility throughout the day, the weather service warned.Snow began falling in the Lehigh Valley around 8 p.m. Saturday and increased in intensity later in the night, leading to treacherous travel conditions.
Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, PennDOT announced it was reducing the speed limit to 45 mph on most major highways in the region, including Interstate 78, Route 22 and Route 33. By mid-morning, speed limits were restored on all area highways.

Numerous crashes were reported as snow led to slick roads. A rollover crash at Airport and Locust roads in East Allen Township sent two people to the hospital, according to Northampton County 911 dispatchers. Elsewhere, a vehicle hit a pole on Uhler Road and East Braden Boulevard in Forks Township, and multiple vehicles were reported stuck on Route 191 in Plainfield Township, according to the Northampton County Emergency Alerts Facebook page.
The weather is also affecting mass transit in the region. LANTA bus service is operating under snow emergency routes, and LANtaVan service is limited to ADA and dialysis trips only.
With the snow moving out, high winds and bitter cold are moving in. Winds could be 25-35 mph. Lee said Valley residents should expect snow to be whipped around with cleared roads possibly becoming covered by snow drifts.
Temperatures on Sunday will stay in the upper 20s, well below freezing, and overnight lows will dip into the low teens, according to the weather service. Combined with the high winds, wind chill values overnight will drop as low as zero in the Lehigh Valley and minus 10 in the highest elevations of the Poconos.
