Less than an inch of snow fell Tuesday across much of the Lehigh Valley as the first winter storm of the season made its way through the region.
Snow started to fall before 8 a.m., creating slick conditions on area roads. However, the storm fell short of earlier expectations for a more significant impact.
Initially, forecasters said between 2 and 4 inches of snow could fall in the Lehigh Valley. By late Monday, the forecast had changed, with models showing the precipitation starting later and temperatures trending warmer, with snowfall totals under 2 inches.
Officially, only .8 inches of snow was recorded at Lehigh Valley International Airport, according to the National Weather Service. However, areas to the north saw higher amounts.
The highest snowfall accumulation in the Lehigh Valley was in Washington Township, Lehigh County, where 4 inches fell, according to weather service data. In Carbon and Monroe counties, where more of the precipitation fell as snow, accumulations were generally in the 2- to 4-inch range.
The earlier predictions for higher snowfall amounts led school districts throughout the Lehigh Valley to close for a snow day or hold virtual learning.
Rain & snow has begun in a few places this morning. Precip along the I-95 corridor may start off as a light snow/mix, but quickly change over to rain this morning. Wintry precip may impact the morning commute along the I-78 corridor and north/west. https://t.co/JiD09By93X pic.twitter.com/lqudYP7gwq
