Lehigh Valley residents who missed out on seeing the northern lights last night may get another chance.

The colorful auroras were visible Tuesday night across most of Pennsylvania. The latest forecast for Wednesday night now shows they could again be visible here, although likely not to the same degree they were the night before.

In its forecast issued Wednesday afternoon, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the phenomenon could be viewable as far south as Pennsylvania, with the southern view line passing right through the Lehigh Valley. An earlier forecast indicated it would not be visible in Pennsylvania at all Wednesday night.

By Thursday night, that southernmost view line will miss almost all of the northeastern United States. Residents in northern states such as Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and Washington might see it over the next two days.

A number of residents in the Lehigh Valley reported seeing the northern lights about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday while severe solar storms hit the Earth, producing colorful auroras.

In addition to the visible aurora, solar storms can cause power system irregularities and intermittent GPS problems, according to NOAA.
