NEW STORY: Rainfall totals trending down for Lehigh Valley as nor’easter set to slam coastal areas
As a nor’easter brings “significant impacts” to the East Coast this weekend, rain from the storm will arrive in the Lehigh Valley earlier than expected, according to forecasters.
Rain will arrive Saturday afternoon before things start to go “really downhill,” meteorologists with the local weather service office wrote Friday in their daily forecast discussion.

The coastal storm off North Carolina is expected to make its way north and bring up to 2 inches of rain across eastern Pennsylvania that will last until Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey.
Forecasters said there could be locally higher rainfall amounts between 3 and 5 inches. Rain is expected to last between 36 and 48 hours. Since the rain will be falling over an extended time period, any flash flooding will likely be limited to urban and poor drainage areas.
Additionally, wind gusts of about 30 mph are likely Sunday through Monday across eastern Pennsylvania.

While the Lehigh Valley is expected to get rain and some wind gusts from the storm, most of the major impacts will be felt well south of Philadelphia, in parts of Delaware and New Jersey along the coast, which will be under a storm watch. Moderate to major coastal flooding is possible, and could be compounded by heavy rain combined with tidal flooding, according to the weather service.
Forecasters said the severity of the impacts depends on the exact track and intensity of the storm, which is still uncertain.
Wind will also be an issue along the coast, with storm-force gusts of 50-60 mph possible.
After the storm moves out Monday, the next few days in the Lehigh Valley should be seasonable, with daytime highs in the 60s.
