Much-needed rainfall is expected in the Lehigh Valley as a cold front brings more seasonable temperatures.

Up to an inch or more could fall through Wednesday, marking what could be the first rainfall of the month, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey.

Forecasters said showers are expected Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, with the heaviest rainfall between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. The rain should taper off in the morning, and the rest of the day should be clear. Severe weather is not expected.

The Lehigh Valley could get between half an inch to an inch of rain overnight, during what has largely been a dry period for the region. No rain has been recorded so far this month, and last month about 2.7 inches of rain was recorded, roughly 2 inches below normal.

The last measurable rainfall for the region was Sept. 25, according to weather service data. The U.S. Drought Monitor, which tracks and displays drought conditions throughout the country, listed most of the Lehigh Valley as “abnormally dry.”

Forecasters said Tuesday’s rain will likely not cause flooding because of how dry it has been. Outside of Tuesday into Wednesday, no rain is in the immediate forecast.

The weather service said there could be more showers early next week.

The rest of this week will be much cooler, with high temperatures in the 60s.

Here is the extended forecast from the National Weather Service:

Wednesday: Showers likely before 2 p.m. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 68. North wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 62. North wind 5 to 10 mph.

Friday: Areas of frost before 8 a.m. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 65.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68.
