Scattered severe thunderstorms with the potential for high winds and flooding are expected Saturday across the Lehigh Valley.

A cold front is expected to move into the region Saturday night into Sunday, and it could bring strong to severe thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service forecast office in Mount Holly, New Jersey. The region is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m.

Forecasters said rain, which could be heavy, could start during the afternoon. There is a 60% chance of storms during the day, followed by a 70% chance at night. Rain will likely linger into Sunday, forecasters said.

The Lehigh Valley is under a marginal risk for severe weather and excessive rainfall. The weather service said there is also a very slight chance of a tornado.

Clusters of storms could “quickly develop” in the afternoon starting in the Poconos and Lehigh Valley before pushing east, meteorologists wrote Saturday in their daily forecast discussion.

The threat of severe weather diminishes by about 8 p.m., but scattered showers could continue beyond that, they noted. Conditions should improve as the night goes on.

The main threat is damaging winds gusts. Additionally, flooding could happen in some urban areas. Rainfall rates of an inch per hour are also possible. Forecasters said there could also be isolated, quarter-sized hail.

The rain expected Saturday comes during a somewhat dry period for the Lehigh Valley. Last month, just 1.6 inches of rain fell, roughly 3 inches below normal, according to weather service data. About 2 inches of rain have fallen so far this month, though. Most of that precipitation fell Thursday alone.

The U.S. Drought Monitor, which tracks and displays drought conditions throughout the country, listed northeastern Northampton County as being “abnormally dry.” The rest of the Lehigh Valley does not have drought conditions.

Sunday, and the rest of the week, should be cooler, with highs in the 70s.

Here is the extended forecast from the National Weather Service:

Sunday: A chance of showers, mainly before 8 a.m. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 76. Calm wind.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 75.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 81.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 75.
