A Kutztown woman is accused of fatally shooting her husband during a domestic dispute Tuesday night, according to authorities.

Police were called about 8:26 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of West Walnut Street in the borough after Elizabeth McKenna, 46, reported that she had just shot her husband, investigators said.

When officers arrived, they found William P. Kelly, 53, dead in the dining room of the residence with a gunshot wound to the head.

The gun used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.

The Berks County Detective’s Office launched an investigation with Kutztown police, with assistance from the Berks County district attorney’s forensic services unit.

According to investigators:

McKenna told detectives that she and Kelly argued before the shooting and her husband was antagonizing her. She went upstairs to get a handgun from a bedroom safe, then returned and shot Kelly at close range.

After the shooting, McKenna put the gun on the dining room table and called 911.

Authorities said a 10-year-old child was also inside the home at the time of the incident. The child was in an upstairs bedroom when the shooting occurred and was not injured.

Charges of first- and third-degree murder and aggravated assault were filed Wednesday. McKenna was taken to the Central Processing Center at the Berks County Courthouse, where she was arraigned by District Judge Gail M. Greth.

McKenna was committed to the county jail without bail.

Kutztown University police and the county coroner’s office assisted at the scene.
